Southern California LASIK

Serving Southern California in Los Angeles and Surrounding Areas

For patients with minimal corneal thickness, high degrees of correction, or whose corneas are either very steep or very flat, we feel that performing a standard LASIK procedure would be unwise. When treating such cases, we feel that an advanced surface ablation or PRK (Photo Refractive Keratectomy) procedure is preferred.

This procedure (also known as flapless LASIK) involves sculpting the cornea at the surface without cutting a flap. The epithelium (the film like protective layer of the cornea) is gently removed using an epithelial scrubber. Laser pulses with variable spot sizes and repetition rates are applied to the treatment area. Mitomycin C may be applied to aid the healing process and chilled saline solution is then used to cool and rinse the cornea. After the procedure, a soft bandage contact lens is placed on the eye to help increase comfort in the eye. Vitamin C, along with steroidal and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drops are prescribed to additionally help with healing. Patients are asked to wear UV protective glasses when outside for several weeks.

Although the recovery period is slightly longer than with a traditional LASIK procedure, patients experience exceptional results and can usually resume work within 3-4 days.

Steps:

1. scrubber, (insert comma)

2. Laser pulses of varied sizes and rates are used to reshape the cornea.

3. Finally, a soft contact lens is temporarily placed on the eye for comfort while healing.
