Conceptually if you think of an onion with the core removed it would be similar to the structure of the eye. The outer coat or outer shell is consisting of the central clear cornea and the opaque clearer. This encompasses the eyes and provides protection. The central part is clear because the collagen fibers are so arranged to allow light to pass unimpaired. Whereas the scleral fibers are more closely packed and do not allow the light to proceed inside the eye. Just behind the cornea is water and hence called aqueous humor and behind this is the iris, which is continuous with the second coat of the eye, also known as the choroid. This structure is the one that has pigment and gives color to the eye. Its role is to prevent reflection of light and hence obtain better vision. Inner most core or shell is the retina, which is like the photographic film of a camera. From the retina rises the optic nerve that converts visual signals into electric signals that are transmitted to the brain. The central hollow is filled with the jelly-like substance called vitreous. The aqueous and vitreous are separated by a crystalline lens. It will be interesting for you to know that the maximum power of the eye is in the cornea. The lens has much less power compared to the cornea but this lens is unlike the lens in a camera are dynamic lens they can change there shape in a process called accommodation and increase there power. There are some important aspects of the structure that helps in better vision. The amount of the light reaching the photographic film or retina is controlled by the pupil that gives us the color of the eyes, hence some people are blue eyed and some are brown eyed. In bright light, the pupil contracts like the diaphragm to decrease the amount of the light whereas in dim light it dilates to increase the amount of light coming in.
